Lidocaine hydrochloride CAS 6108-05-0 API FAQ

Q: What is lidocaine hydrochloride used for?

A: Lidocaine belongs to the family of medicines called local anesthetics. This medicine prevents pain by blocking the signals at the nerve endings in the skin. This medicine does not cause unconsciousness as general anesthetics do when used for surgery.

Q: Why is lidocaine hydrochloride used more than lidocaine?

A: Lidocaine Hydrochloride USP Monohydrate binds more readily to sodium channels in an activated state; thus, it tends to take effect faster in rapidly firing neurons.

Q: Is lidocaine hydrochloride a narcotic?

A: No, lidocaine (Xylocaine) isn't a narcotic. It's a local or regional anesthetic, which means it lowers your ability to feel pain in a specific area where it's injected. This medication works by preventing nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.

Q: Is it safe to use lidocaine hydrochloride?

A: Lidocaine is usually a very safe medicine.

Q: How long does lidocaine hydrochloride stay in your system?

A: It will, however, also transport local anesthetics away from the tissue site, reducing the risk of direct nerve toxicity. Lidocaine has a 90% hepatic metabolism, and the elimination half-life is 1.5 to 2 hours, which can be prolonged up to 3.5 fold in patients with severe liver disease.

Q: Can lidocaine make you sleepy?

A: One of the rare side effects of topical lidocaine is drowsiness or a feeling of overt sleepiness.

Q: Is lidocaine a good painkiller?

A: Lidocaine, as a medium-acting local anesthetic with short onset time, is well-recognized, not only as a valuable medication for numerous neuropathic pain conditions, but also for the management of both acute and chronic pain.

Q: Who should not use lidocaine?

A: This medicine may cause a rare, but serious blood problem called methemoglobinemia. The risk may be increased in children younger than 6 months of age, elderly patients, or patients with certain inborn defects.
